Windshield chips are among some of the easier repairs, however, that depends on what tools you are using. In the market today, there are several different windshield repair resin suppliers that sell inadequate tools and resins that don't restore a windshield's strength integrity. 

Measuring whether a chip or break in a windshield is repaired must be looked at soley from the standpoint of safety. Many brands overlook this and in fact are not to concerned with safety standards or are Federal Lab Safety approved. Simply applying some resin into a chip is not enough.

Yes you should worry about a small chip in the windshield! Why? Well it has to do with avoding having a replacement done on your vehicle. 

What you don't know is that by letting a small rock or stone chip go unrepaired will grow; it will spread! Often these small breaks can turn into a huge Star Break and or potentially a combination break. 

In most scenarios, a stone chip that spreads can still be repaired, but it depends on who you contact. Most people will call their insurance company and again what you don't know is that you will be forwarded to Safelite who has a bias to influence a replacement rather than a repair. 

Windshield Replacements are proven to be unsafe majority of the time they are not done with adquete tools and trained professionals. Safelite advertises that they can replace your windshield outside of a garage and come to you or to your job and replace the windshield. But this is very flawed and it's proven fact that replacing a windshield needs to be done in doors, by a highly trained technician. 

Only in very rare circumstance where windshieds are destroyed beyond repair, and even if the windshield is successfully replace, only the factory has the tools to put the necessary tension and stress for the laminated windshield to do it's job.

Fixing a chip can sometimes really depend on the size. Typically they start at $49 and go as high as $89. Rock or Stone Chips that have a a star break can take longer to fill with resin and the repair technician will need to use special tool to open the windshield. Most will charge extra per leg of a star chip.

It does not matter the size of the rock chip, it can be repaired. In most cases the technician that comes out to make the chip repair will not need to drill. Chips that are smaller than dime or penny can be repaired!

In most cases a windshield chip that's been correctly repaired should look drastically different than the initial break. In some windshield stone or chip breaks might still be visible, but it's mostly a hairline or a refraction.

Another way to tell if a windshield chip been repaired is if the stone chip spreads or grows. If this happens it means the individual who made the repair either used incorrect resin, lack of polymerization (incorrect repair method), and inadequate tools. 

Yes, a small chip in a windshield will spread rather quickly. Depending on the climate your vehicle or if your car is garaged or not will dictate how fast that spread happens. 

With temperature changes like cold to hot, can force this spread.

Do not wait to have a small chip repaired!

To stop a windshield chip from spreading, you must effectively inject windshield repair resin into the impact point of the stone or chip break. 

In some situations you have to drill into the windshield in order to make the repair. If you don't have a pocket of air in the windshield chip, then you are not injecting resin into the chip to fill it. 

Most DIY Kits advertise being able to fix small chips, but it you look at the contents of the package, you will notice two things. 

1. They will not have a drill included!

This is very risky, because without the drill, you are just glazing a chip's impact point. A windshield is made of three layers with the most important layer being the middle layer (pvb, laminate layer) and that's where the resin must reach and be properly wicked in order to align the molecules for a strong bond. 

How on earth can you do that if you do not drill! 

In most repairs you will have to drill and that takes practice. Many of our customers are intimidated about drilling into the windshield, but with the correct education and practice they are able to overcome this fear and realize it's quite easy. But for the average consumer, drilling into the windshield will be uncomfortable experience and wont want to do it! 

Also about 70% of the time you will need to drill and the fact that these do-it-yourself windshield chip repair kits don't have any drill is just risky, how does anyone know the odds are great enough to not include one and with instruction.

2. Look at the repair bridge itself, it's flimsy and plastic! The problem with these bridge is they are not big enough to open up the chip and cannot inject resin under pressure to ensure a fill and create an overfill.

As a result, repairs made with a diy kit will return or leave behind an ugly blemish in the windshield. The good news is a trained technician can re-tap the windshield chip and repair it. That's because the resins used in the diy kits are watery thin.

No, Safelite uses inferior windshields made by Chinese manufactures that are poor quality windshields. 

Safelite can charge up to $1000 plus in some vehicle types. Due to new adas windshields (Active Driver Assits Systems), the windshield have to be recalibrated and can really drive up the cost of a replacement. 

If not an ADAS Windshield (2015 or newer) you are looking at about $500.00 and in most situations the Insurance will make that replacement. 

Insurance Compaines will forward your call to Belron who handles the calls for Safelite who instantly get's paid by the insurance company.

As mentioned before, Safelite will charge the customer for the windshield, but in reality you already pay for the windshield through your insurance. So if you have an active insurance policy, 90% you don't pay anything and Safelite collects from your insurance. 

If you do not have insurance on a vehicle you could be eating $500 to $1000 plus for a replacement out of pocket.

Yes, your insurance will cover small rock chips!

However do not attempt to call the insurance yourself, instead call a windshield crack repair or windshield chip repair professional and have them make the call for you.

If you can locate an Ultra Bond licensee they are trained to handle making the insurance claim generally within 15 mins.

The best way to get your Insurance to pay for your windshield repair is to enforce your rights in your policy. 

Allstate, State Farm, Allied, and several others marketing forwards to Belron and Safelite where trained CSRs are to set the appointment for a replacement. They will talk you out of a repair. 

The insurance companies work with Safelite to make the payment so you can have your windshield replaced right away.

We do not in any shape of form encourage vehicle owners to replace their windshields unless it is totally destroyed. 

In the event, that you had an unfortuante event that destroyed your windshield completely by object, act of god, and or a car accident, then yes, use your insurance to have the windshield replaced. 

You pay for it anyway year-over-year with your insurance company and won't have to pay a deductable in most insurance policies.
